Optical Coherence Tomography - OCT
How the test is performed:
-
After dilation of the eye, the patient sits in front of
a machine and stares at a greenish blinking dot. A light
scanner of varying patterns scans appropriate portions
of the patient’s eye. The technician ensures the test
quality is of an appropriate standard. The patient may
be asked not to blink for brief periods. There is a mild
flash, but no pain. Each eye is usually scanned at least
four times or more using various scanning methods.
Patients do not usually report feeling pain, though some
feel unsettled by the flash of the strobe after each
scan. The test runs approximately 10 – 15 minutes.
-
The OCT machine immediately produces reports for review
by the physician.
